Project 14: Installing a Wireless Router
Steps to installing a wireless router:
- Unpack router and contents. Lay out the contents in front of you
- Plug the ethernet cord from the modem into the ethernet port of the router
- Optional: Plug an ethernet cord into computer and plug other end into one of the ethernet ports on the router. Connection could also be wireless.
- Now connect power supply to the router and wait for the router to start up.
- If you have a disc with the router, insert and start the setup wizard. If not, find the ip address for the router. Ip address may be included in instructions or may be under connection settings on the computer.
- Name and secure the router with a password.
Project 13: Choosing a Wireless Router
There are various categories used to determine what router is best or suitable for you. The categories include speed, price, popularity, and the style of the router.
Speed: One of the most important attributes of a wireless router is its speed and range. The ability of the router to reach farther and to transfer data quicker determines the efficiency of the router. However, a matching provider speed is needed to reach the top speeds of your router. A person with a large house needs a router with maximum range capabilities matched with high data transfer speeds. High speed routers include gaming and HD streaming routers. Smaller, average sized houses do not need a higher speed router because average provider speeds will not reach the max speed of the router.
Price: With a recession, the price has to be right. Wireless routers can cost anywhere between $60 and $180. Average low cost routers will be average speed routers that are intended for basic home use for web searching. Higher end routers will cost more. These routers are used for gaming, downloading, HD video streaming, and also business use.
Popularity: Popularity can narrow down router options because popularity defines the efficiency of a router cost wise and speed wise. Some routers may be popular for their low price and average speeds, or they may be solely popular because of their speeds. Popular router brand names include Cisco Linksys, Belkin, and Dell.
Style: Style is also an important factor in determining what router you will get. Nobody likes an ugly piece of technology in their house. Also, some just look cooler than others.
The wireless router that I've chosen is a Cisco Linksys E3000. The E3000 is a higher end gaming router that is easy to setup, secure, and has a nice, sleek design. This router was also only around $120 which, for this type of router, is a very fair price.
